Giles Watling MP, Member of Parliament for Clacton, hosted a debate in Westminster Hall on the 27th of June to advocate for the ban on importing fur into the UK. With fur farming being banned on the grounds of cruelty in the UK since 2003, that fur can still be imported from abroad presents significant issues for animal rights, human health, and environmental welfare.
With cruelty-free fur alternatives, Mr Watling argues that in fact, we should be leading the charge - as we have for centuries - on ending the import of fur and using these alternatives instead.
Speaking after the debate, Mr Watling said: "The conditions that these animals are subjected to are disgusting, degrading, and worst of all unnecessary. I was proud of this country when we banned fur farming in 2023, and I will be equally proud when we lead the way in banning the import of fur into the UK."
