Early Day Motions (EDMs) are formal motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons. However, very few are actually debated. EDMs allow MPs to draw attention to an event or cause. MPs register their support by signing individual motions.
On some occasions, constituents have contacted me to sign a particular EDM. As these are not an effective way to bring about change, I do not sign EDMs. I will, however, be sure to bear the views of the constituent in mind if this issue is discussed on the floor of the House.
