Giles Watling, MP for Clacton, recently visited Tendring Technology College to speak to students about refugees and immigration.
Giles visited on 8th March, in response to a letter that he received from the College’s Oxfam Youth Club about the situation of refugees and immigrants in and around Europe. The students had recently returned from their trip to a Greek refugee camp and shared stories and images of their visit.
During the discussions, Giles explained that he supports the decision to allow genuine refugees into our country; saying that “It’s really important to engage with other cultures and other people, and we have been accepting of refugees for years. We are all equal and it is our duty to help those in genuine need. Moreover, allowing refugees into our country often allows paths of trade and friendship to be extended from other countries to ours.”
Following the meeting, Mr Watling also toured the college explaining that he was impressed with the college adding: “I’ve always thought this is a great school.”
Since his election, Giles has regularly undertaken visits to local schools and remains keen to visit as many as possible, or to have students visit him in Parliament – TTC visited Giles in Parliament last December. To find out more about potential visits, email: giles.watling.mp@parliament.uk
