Giles Watling, MP for Clacton, recently attended the A120 Networking Event in Colchester, to reaffirm his support for the campaign to upgrade this vital economic link.
The event, organised by the Haven Gateway Partnership (HGP), was held at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester to thank the local business community for the role they have played in the campaign so far, and to ask that they continue to be vociferous in their support between now and 2019, when successful Road Investment Strategy (RIS2) schemes are to be announced.
During the event, Giles spoke about the need to unlock new economic opportunities in Essex, which an upgraded A120 could deliver – it is estimated that upgrading the A120 will generate £1.1bn and £1.3bn for the local economy, and improve journey times by up to 56%.
Since his election, Giles has actively supported the A120 campaign in Parliament, and has held regular discussions with Ministers to make the case for this upgrade, as businesses can only wait so long for our infrastructure to improve or the local economy will stagnate. Following these meetings, Giles was pleased to learn that, as we move toward the RIS2 decision making process, this scheme is in a strong position to receive the funding it requires.
Over the next twelve months Giles will continue to work with HGP, local MPs and Essex business leaders to support this vital upgrade to our local infrastructure.
Giles said: “I am pleased that this important campaign has made so much progress over the last twelve months, and it is right to thank the local business community for all of their support so far. An upgrade to the A120 would deliver real improvements to the Clacton constituency, and I will continue to lobby the Department for Transport for funding at every opportunity.”
